Baltic 44.8m
Performance Sloop.
October 00
through March 01.
Consulting for the captain, Glen Kessels on the
engineering systems design of a 44.8m Baltic performance
sloop, for Dr. Hasso Plattner.
Responsibilities were to assess and advise on proposed
systems design and performance, in consideration of
racing the yacht, and reducing redundancy to save
weight. In depth analysis of the deck machinery and
propulsion system hydraulics, and the associated PLC
control were carried out, in consideration of the yacht
conforming and performing to the owner’s requirement.
Mari-Cha III
44.8m Ketch,
previous holder of the ‘unassisted’ Atlantic mono-hull
record, 8d 23h & 59m.
1995-1999. Having
spent two years on the crew of Mari-Cha III, 11 months
of which was spent at Sensation Yachts Limited, plus
seven months working at Marten Marine on the hull
construction, over a two year period. In depth knowledge and experience
were gained, relating to the history
of research, construction and development of the yacht,
which was ground breaking in many aspects. Ranging
from construction difficulties, developing from the
sheer size of the hull, material selection, and the
limitations of building to a specific weight. The
limitations of building in composites, in relation to
traditional materials, with regards to the design
office.
This was backed up with a practical (hands on experience
at Marten Marine) and technical knowledge (through a
degree at The Solent Southampton University), of advanced
composite construction processes and materials and
engineering systems.
The
approach to engineering where minimum weight was of
paramount importance. Resulted in little redundancy,
where the main source of energy was diesel.
Was a
minor cause for concern as a sea going engineer, however
in the field proved to be very reliable. Equipment
choice being of paramount importance, which was the
result of in depth research.
Lateral
thinking resulted in some interesting weight saving
through electrical conductor choice.
